Around 2000 years old Armenian theatre was first enlightened in the 20th century under the state’s care, which is an outstanding expression of the Yerevan Drama Theatre, under the auspices of Yerevan Municipality founded by Hrachya Ghaplanyan who is one of the most famous directors in 1967. Over the past 50 years, the theatre has gained wide popularity in the homeland, the former Soviet Union and the wide spread Armenian Diaspora.The theatre has toured all around the world. The theatre has participated in several famous Shakespeare festivals. Many articles and written feedback illustrate the love and dignity the Drama theatre enjoys wherever it is, due to its new and unique stage design. Drama theatre has long been in the center of attention of Armenian and foreign professional theatrical experts, to which extent depends the current condition and development of the Armenian theatre. Today the theatre is named after its founder Hrachya Ghaplanyan. This nominative is symbolic: The Drama theatre continues its best traditions and enriches them with new stage discoveries. It is repertory theatre with more than hundred plays performed on this stage. Today there are twenty performances in the Drama theatre repertory.


Distinguished Director, the great organizer of theatrical work, National Artist of the RA and the USSR, was awarded the State Prize and Nations’ Friendship Award, was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the RA and the USSR.He was born in the village of Gyargyar in the Stepanavan region in 1923. His first performance took place in 1935 at Leninakan Drama theatre, where his creative way started from. Ghaplanyan played about 60 roles at the Yerevan State Youth theatre and was the principal director and art director of this theatre. He was also general director in G .Sundukyan theatre and Spendiaryan Opera and Ballet Theatre.

His directorial talent was completely and revealed at the Yerevan Drama theatre, where he was the art director and general director for over twenty years. Here he conducted several performances, which are one of the most memorable pages of the history of the theatre: “Anne Frank’s Diary”, “Night Story”, “Divine Comedy”, “Anush”, “A Hand-made Trivia”, “Medea”, “Love and Laughter”, “Unhealthy”,” Seven Stations”, “The persecuted apostle”, “Richard the Third”, “Executioner”, “Dentist of the Orient”, “Ladies and Gentlemen”, “Repetitor”, “Calling for the Divine”, “Recreation”, “Your Last Descent”and so on. The Ghaplanyan Theatre is characterized by striking theatreism. He has also performed in a number of foreign theatres in the Moscow Theatre of Communist Union, Small Theatre, Vakhtangov Theatre, Bratislava National Theatre and other places. Hrachya Ghaplanyan was a great theatre organizer with an unconditional devotion. He was the chairman of the Armenian Theatre Company. Her theatrical activity was widely known in the Soviet Union.Together with A. Aslamazyan, he founded the theatre of Barekamutyun, which strengthened and intensified the well-known theatrical relationships throughout the USSR. He was highly appreciated by prominent artists, directors and theatre experts of that time. Since 1989 the Dramatic theatre has been renamed after Hrachya Ghaplanyan.


This is what Russian and Soviet prominent actor, National Artist of the USSR, President of All-Russian Theatre Company Mikhail Tsaryov has said about Albert Aslamazyan: ”Aslamazyan is a professor of theatrical work, without who it’s difficult to imagine not only Yerevan Drama theatre, but also our theatrical life in general, because he is standing next to our remarkable theatrical general directors”. Other assessments have also been addressed to a person who was not only an artist but also devoted to art and spirit with his soul and heart. Albert Aslamazyan has been the director of Hrachya Ghaplanyan Drama theatre for more than ten years. Due to his tremendous efforts in organizational skills it was possible to organize the Moscow Theatre performances, which had unexpected success. Albert Aslamazyan formed the connection of the theatre to the republican settlements, organized tours in Leninakan-Gyumri, Vanadzor, then expanded the touristic geography. Directly under Albert Aslamazyan Shakespeare performances, Russian dramaturgy festivals were organized, which were unique throughout the Soviet Union. The skilled director managed to invite the best theatres of the USSR to Armenia, create close relationships with the USSR Academy of the Small Theatre, The Moscow theatre after Vakhtangov, St. Petersburg Theatre after Komissarzheskaya, and with Baltic famous theatres such as The Theatre after Lensovet, Tbilisi Theatre after K. Marjanashvili, The Theatre after Sh. Rustaveli. Hrachya Ghaplanyan was the founder of “Barekamutyun” theatre in Yerevan, but Albert Aslamazyan made a great contribution and proved that a unique theatre can be created without having a stable state funding. Later the Theatre of Nations, founded in Moscow, substantiated its principles on the experience of Albert Aslamazyan. A. Aslamazyan’s family was known throughout the USSR. His wife was famous opera singer Gohar Galajyan, his son, Leonid Aslamazyan, continued his father’s traditions and also became a director of the Drama theatre.
